SLJ #3 | He Wa Poi

For the third challenge of the Summer Learning Journey Program I decided to work on the He Wa Poi kick start challenge.

The challenge was written completley in Te reo Maori, So I decided to use others peoples work as a guide. Using these guides I was able to create a small and simple poi like object.

This activity confused me as it started out hard because I didn’t know what to do. But it eventually got easier.

SLJ #2 | Toa Samoa

The 2nd SLJ challenge was to create a poster about what the colours in the Samoan Flag Represent. Red represents courage, blue freedom, and white purity. The step it up task allows us to earn more points by completing extra tasks. This step it up activity was to recreate the first task using a flag from your culture.

I enjoyed this activity because I was finally able to learn about what these flags meant as well as sharing that meaning with others.

SLJ #1 | Giga Manga

For the first SLJ (Summer Learning Journey) activity I was fortunate enough to be able to expirement with the art of manga. Manga is a Japanese art style generally used in comic books and graphic novels.

While drawing I was aided by a feature called the magic pen. It allowed me to formulate a design easily. After I had partially created a character I decided to experiment with the color features. I chose a multitude of colours to help find my vision. I ended up blurring my design, but its information I will use in my next attempt. I was intrigued at how just a few steps could help me make manga.

I enjoyed this activity because it was simple and intriguing wich made a great hook for users.

Evolution of Transportation

LI: To identify how technology has changed when we consider how it was fit for purpose.

Today we were looking at the change of technology. Over the past 100 years, technology has changed in order to make things easier. This is called fit for purpose. Transportation devices have become more convenient compared to their initial design.

I found this task intriguing because it was interesting listing the differences from over 100 years ago.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that most cars were far slower than current cars.

Attempt New Things & Ask for Help

LI: Students will learn that it’s okay to try new things and to ask for help when needed.

For PB4L, we are reminding ourselves why it is important to attempt to do new things and to ask for help. This session encourages students and people so that they can continue doing what they find interest in or so they can improve their academic performance.

It is important to attempt new things because it allows us to become more socially active, which further increases our prior knowledge.

It is important to ask for help because it simirlaly allows us to obtain more knowledge than previously.

I found this task uplifting because I was able to read a variety of motivational quotes.

Match Girls Strike of 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I found this task educating because I was able to learn more about past historic events.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was phossy jaw, which affects multiples areas in the head.

Read Theory DLO

LI: To better understand questioning
Today we reminded ourselves what questions were asking us to do with the information we had. It is important when you are answering questions about a text you have read that you know what information you need to look for to find the answer.

We created a collaborative DLO to help other strengthen their connections to the language of questioning, using an exemplar text from Readtheory.org and our own questions.

I enjoyed this activity because I was able to gain a better understanding on the art of questioning.

Provocation | Should Fireworks be banned?

Today we were presented with a provacation, should fireworks be banned? A provocation is when you look at both perspectives of an arguement.

We started off by listing some notes for each perspective. We had 10 mins to research each side. Afterwards we selected three of those notes and applied them to a class chart. My group included ideas such as how they create a sense of euphoria and how they cause a multitude of problems for a short lightshow.

Next we each created an informed opinion by having an extended discussion with our group. We used eachothers ideas to help form our own perspective on the topic. Finally we used each of those ideas and put them into a DLO with our final opinion on the topic.

I enjoyed this activity because I was able to grasp a better understanding on extended conversations with my group.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2022

L.I: To showcase learning and creativity through films

November 8th 2022 marks the day of the Manaiakalani Film Festival. The Manaiakalni Film Festival is an event where schools of the Manaiakalani cluster including Panmure Bridge attend at Hoyts Cinema in Sylvia park to watch films created by the schools.

My favourite film is Panmure Bridge class LS1 film. Pokeblade. Pokeblade is basically two shows combied together and a kid gets bullied so he tries to fight back. But he was too weak so he trains his Pokemon which is a part of the Pokemon show. After all that the main protaginist gets bullied again, this time when he battles the bullies he the Pokemon has become more stronger and has even evoled. He then defeats both bullies Pokemon using Beyblade combat technique.

My favourite film outside of Panmure Bridge is the “In Your Head” film created by Ruapotaka School. It’s about when the teacher teaches the class but the class is borden by him. So we look into the thoughts of the students. The funniest thought was when one of the student becomes the pirate at the beginning of the Spongebob intro.

The event was a whole lot of fun and I was impressed with what each school came up with for their films. I also enjoyed some of the funny moments put in there. It made me laughed. I enjoyed all of the schools films.

3 Motivational Quotes

LI: To create 3 motivational posters using quotes from inspirational people.

For an Excellence CARE award, Leon and I collaborated to create 3 inspirational posters containing inspirational quotes.

Our first quote was from John Wooden, He once said “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” We think that the meaning behind this quote is That you can always rely on your mind.

Our second quote was from Master Oogway from Kung fu Panda. He once said “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present” We think this means to treasure what you currently have.

Our third quote was from Samuel Langhorne Clemens. “The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you find out why”. We think that the hidden meaning behind this quote is you could always look back on your why.

We found this activity very interesting because of how much quotes we found that could inspire others. We especially enjoyed creating the posters to spread the word.
